We are looking for an Associate to join our highly regarded band 1 Property Litigation team in Bristol, rated by Chambers & Partners as a national leader outside London.

The practice

Our specialist Real Estate Litigation lawyers excel in helping clients resolve a wide range of disputes from landlord and tenant to complex and highly technical development disputes. We provide a cradle-to-grave service and have a wide range of experience, from advising clients on possible angles to exploit and add value on investment portfolios or development site clearance, to early-stage dispute avoidance advice and mediation, full-blown litigation and third-party determination.

The team are particularly known for advising leading developers on their complex, high value disputes related to conditional contracts, overage agreements and options; advising major clients in the Energy and Infrastructure space such as SSE, Western Power Distribution and Wales and West Utilities on disputes over land rights and the exercise of statutory powers over land; our experience in the Telecoms sector, such as our legal expertise in rights over land arising under the Electronic Communications Code, advising clients such as Vodafone; and our work with pension funds/investors, meaning we regularly advise important investor clients on their most complex property disputes – both commercial and residential.

This particular role would work across the team to support Leona Briggs (Partner) and other senior team members, mainly focussing on real property, development and utilities work as well as supporting projects for our corporate occupier clients.

The team

Led by Leona Briggs (Partner) who is rated in both Chambers and Partners and Legal 500, the team in Bristol currently comprises of 1 Legal Director, 1 Associate Director, 4 Senior Associates, 1 Associate and 2 Paralegals. We work closely across office with our London colleagues, and the team there comprises 1 Partner, 1 Associate Director, 2 Senior Associates, 1 Associate and 1 Trainee Solicitor.

The work

We acted for BDW Trading Ltd in a complex agricultural tenancy dispute relating to a significant residential development site with a development value of over £30 million.

We have been advising Vodafone Ltd who operated significant data and fixed line telecoms operations from a site in Manchester that was located in the middle of a large regeneration scheme.

We are advising Dune, the leading high street footwear retailer, on an important opposed lease renewal (on redevelopment grounds) in respect of its Covent Garden store.

We are advising Ward Homes on an application that has been made to register a strategic development site as a new town or village green.

We advised Scottish & Newcastle plc, the major brewing company, on a significant tenancy dispute.

We are advising Western Power Distribution, a major longstanding client, on its dispute with Network Rail concerning the cost of modifying overhead electricity infrastructure that crosses the GWR mainline between Paddington and Swansea.

Technical skills and experience

Due to the technical nature of the practice, we are looking for evidence of a strong academic record and training ideally gained within a large regional or City Firm. We are also looking for candidates who have one seat gained within a recognised and respected Property Litigation team during their training. As a guide, due to the nature of the work and the structure of the team, we are looking to appoint an Associate in this area, although we will consider candidates with more or less experience.
