Investor State – Elite US Firm
The firm is a part of the US elite and this positive growth continues in 2016. The global revenues are in excess of $1 billion and PEP has consistently increased. The firm focuses very much on how partners help each other rather than personal originations - so it is the ideal environment to grow a practice. The lawyers whom the firm have recruited are from leading firms and in the US the firm would be seen as aspirational by many lawyers. The London office has grown consistently and in terms of the current plan, there are only a few specifically strategic roles remaining. The firm is also quite well insulated from any potential implications of the referendum as the majority of the clients are internationally headquartered, are geographically well spread and in sectors which should not be directly impacted.
Investor State Arbitration and current team:
The UK litigation team is well established (but the firm in London is full service) and is at the heart of the London office. The partners are mainly focused on complex international disputes and some of the partners also have commercial arbitration expertise but are not known as specialists in the area. Although the client base is quite diverse (both geographically and across a number of sectors), there is a strong government theme. The partners have represented a number of governments and although this will underpin an investor state practice there is the expectations that you will work on both sides. There will be existing investor state work but the precise amount has not been quantified.
The firm would ideally like to recruit a dedicated investor state specialist (a mixed practice would be fine but the focus would be on building an investor state practice). Reputation is more important than following, but you will need to demonstrate a track record of business generation and winning mandates. You need to show you have the confidence to grow and lead the practice. But this is very much a strategic role, and, as such, the partners understand that in this practice area a portable following (in the traditional sense) is very difficult to secure, so the emphasis has been on background, personal credibility in the market, arbitration contacts in the investor state world and the ability to package this altogether on the platform, and, build a business for the long term.
