London, Canary Wharf: £66,000 - £74,000

Ofgem is committed to making a positive difference for energy consumers through effective regulation of the market and close working with suppliers to ensure sustainable energy for consumers and businesses in the UK.

The Ofgem legal teams work across the policy divisions, on matters relating to gas and electricity consumers and retail markets, as well as industry codes and licensing. Working alongside policy colleagues, our lawyers apply their expertise to a broad range of important, fast-moving and high-profile projects, including competition in the energy market, the design and implementation of a retail market price cap, switching, and smart meter roll-out. As the team’s Principal Legal Adviser, you’ll provide quality assurance and acknowledged legal expertise to a range of projects and subject matters, using your experience and insight to motivate and develop expertise within the legal team. It’s a demanding and sometimes heavy workload that will see you managing competing priorities, anticipating potential legal risks, challenges and obstacles, and keeping up-to-date with legal developments in relevant areas. Able to lead on strategic thinking with regards to legal advice and policy development, you’ll also have the interpersonal skills to develop and maintain key stakeholder relationships.

A role at this level demands a qualified solicitor, barrister or advocate with significant experience in EU/UK competition law, consumer protection law or public law. Your strong leadership, influencing and project management skills will be complemented by excellent powers of analysis, sound legal judgement and demonstrable expertise in assessing and using evidence. Team management experience is not essential, but we expect you to have the necessary skills to support the Legal Director in the leadership and management of the team.

Ofgem can offer you a comprehensive and competitive benefits package, which includes:

  • Up to 30 days’ annual leave
  • Excellent training and development opportunities
  • The opportunity to join the Civil Service pension arrangements, which include a valuable range of benefits
  • Flexible working hours and family friendly policies
  • Subsidised gym and restaurant (London only)
  • Interest free season ticket loan.

Closing date: midnight, 30th April 2018.

Ofgem is an equal opportunities employer. Protecting consumers and powering the future of the energy debate.
