Legal Adviser / Senior Legal Adviser

London or Glasgow

Glasgow: £41,200-£52,600
London: £43,600-£56,650

Ofgem is committed to making a positive difference for energy consumers through effective regulation of the market and close working with suppliers to ensure sustainable energy for consumers and businesses in the UK.
Our legal function is divided into five teams, which are aligned with our key policy divisions:
Consumers & Competition; Energy Systems; E-Serve; Improving Regulation, and Networks. This position relates to the team supporting the policy work of the Consumers and Markets Directorate, providing advice across a range of policy areas. The work we do is at the cutting edge of energy regulation, with the team’s current portfolio including legal input on Brexit matters, advising on the REMIT regulation (dealing with wholesale market integrity and transparency) and significant policy workstreams such as charging arrangements for embedded generators and implementation of
European Network Codes. Some of these areas are subject to ongoing appeal or judicial review that are being run by the team. Our new Legal Adviser will provide expert legal advice to policy colleagues on a range of issues, support other workstreams with advice on code and licence
modifications, and determine disputes between network operators and users of the network.

It is interesting, high-profile work that brings a demanding, sometimes heavy workload and competing priorities; to succeed, you will need to be solutions-driven, analytical and used to making evidence-based legal judgements. Whether you are qualified to practise as a solicitor, barrister or
advocate in the UK or are a professionally qualified lawyer from overseas, you will demonstrate evidence of preparedness to sit the QLTS on appointment if required. We are looking for somebody with experience of advising in at least one of the following areas: the regulation of the energy or
another utility sector; public law; EU/UK competition law; data protection and privacy law; consumer protection law. You will be working as part of a large, collaborative team, so excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate effectively are essential. First-rate stakeholder
engagement capability is also required, as you will be managing relationships between policy colleagues, other internal legal teams, government, regulators and legal counsel.

Ofgem can offer you a comprehensive and competitive benefits package, which includes:

  • Up to 30 days’ annual leave
  •  Excellent training and development opportunities
  • The opportunity to join the Civil Service pension arrangements, which include a valuable range of benefits
  • Flexible working hours and family friendly policies
  • Subsidised gym and restaurant (London location only)
  • Interest free season ticket loan.

Closing date: 13th August 2018
