Senior Lawyer – The Role
With extensive litigation experience in UK, EU and international environmental law you are now ready to take on a role with more responsibility and have greater impact. That is the opportunity we can offer as Senior Advocacy and Campaigns Lawyer position in our legal advocacy unit at the WWF.
Our mission is to stop the degradation of the planet’s natural environment and to build a future in which people can live in harmony with nature. Our 10 year strategy commits us to ending the loss of nature and halting mass extinctions by ensuring governments begin to restore nature by 2030. You will be part of the team providing expert legal advice and representation on environmental, public law and human rights to the Advocacy & Campaigns department so that our advocacy and campaigns achieve greatest impact.
Leading a small team you will develop the unit’s annual operating plan. This will involve collaborating with advocacy and campaigns teams to understand where legal advice might be required as well as giving advice, providing representation and developing legal strategies. You will also lead on specific legal projects, particularly work concerned with the UK’s exit from the EU. Important will be the ability to identify and advise on possible opportunities for litigation as well as commence proceedings. You will draft amendments and advise on provisions for inclusion in new UK legislation too. Your remit will include submitting oral and written evidence to consultations and Parliamentary advisory/committee processes as well as generating legal initiatives. As one of our legal experts you will ensure we remain up to date on the law and changes to case law, and comply with professional requirements.
Senior Lawyer– Requirements
You must have a Solicitor’s certificate and significant experience in a similar role. This will include litigation experience in UK, EU and international environmental law. You will also be used to delivering legal outcomes and advice to support advocacy and campaigns, particularly on matters involving decisions to litigate. You will have experience of working on environmental issues and can demonstrate a commitment to the aims of WWF too.
Highly organised, you will possess sound legal judgement and good strategic skills as well as the ability to adapt to changing priorities. A good communicator you will excel at translating complex legal issues for differing audiences and are comfortable building rapport with various teams and international networks. You will be effective at developing high performing teams too.
Who are we?
WWF believes in a future where people and nature thrive.
Best known as the world’s leading conservation body, we’ve seen first-hand how wildlife, the environment and human activity are all interlinked.
That’s why our passion for safeguarding the natural world has to be backed up by other environmental action – tackling the global threat of climate change (through our big global campaigns like Earth Hour) and helping people to change the way they live to ease pressure on natural resources.
WWF is at the heart of global activities in all these areas. We have teams of highly skilled professionals working with governments, businesses and communities here in the UK and around the world.
